Warning before we start ⚠️
Before we start cooing over these properties together, there’s something I need to reveal to you.
As an interior designer, I’ve worked on dozens of successful extension projects in the last year and the truth is they can go very wrong when not planned in the correct way.
Layouts in particular can pose huge regrets for renovators.
You do all the work, spend all the money on extending, and then all of a sudden you realise there’s not enough space for that island you wanted, or there won’t be enough space to move around the dining table.
It’s heart breaking, but it’s avoidable if you plan in the correct way.
I created my Plan Your Extension Bundle to show you how to plan your extension layout with no regrets, plus I have so bonus cost-saving ideas & a timeline for you to feel assured you’re doing work in the right order.
Let’s jump in and look at these impressive dormer bungalow extensions!
1. A triple dormer amplifies bungalow symmetry
We know how well a dormer works on a bungalow which is why we love to see a triple dormer like what you see on this lovely home. For the design-minded among us, it ticks a satisfying box by using the roof dormers to amplify the symmetry of the rest of the bungalow.
From the inside, you’ll be adding bags of light which makes each upstairs room that much nicer to spend time in and ticks all boxes for adding extra standing room.
The homeowners have tied the whole project together by coordinating window frames with the front fence, making for such a thoughtful touch.
2. Design one continuous bungalow dormer
This simple design is a contemporary spin on the traditional dormer extension.
With enough length in your roof to work with, you can really maximise the interior space by opting for one continuous dormer structure and it gives you so much more potential with what you do with the interior layout.
We love seeing projects like this which use a dormer renovation to turn the whole home into something modern and so stylish.
3. Try coordinating external finishes for the perfect look
When you’re taking on a bungalow renovation project, the smartest move you can make it to overhaul what you’re working with by maximising on every point of potential. Think loft conversion, dormer installation and upgrading the exterior look, that way, you’re making a smart choice with the value you’re adding.
Keep in mind that you need to be careful with scale when opting for dormers so keep the size in flow with the surrounding roof and the broader layout of the home.
One of our favourite features of this particular home has to be the wood panelling coordinating between the front porch and the dormer windows, it’s such a beautiful look.
4. Aim high with a triple joined dormer
We’d like to introduce this idea with a simple equation. One dormer means interior space, added head height and improved living space. Triple that and join them?
You’re creating a combined space with even more of an impact than you’d get with separate dormers and, if you have this potential with your reno, it really pays dividends.
The look from the exterior is in keeping with a classic bungalow renovation but you’re effectively extending your second floor into something so much more spacious.
5. Think about building a completely new roof
A dormer extension and loft conversion can sometimes require a complete roof re-do or upgrade in order to make structural changes or thermal improvements.
To really finish off your new dormer bungalow, consider making a new roof part of your renovation plans.
As with this fantastic home, it’s the finishing touches that really make it work.
6. Keep the original architectural features
Dormer extensions often go hand in hand with a roof renovation and retiling.
As you transform some parts of your house, don’t forget to maintain the historical and interesting features that made you fall in love with your house in the first place.
This lovely home has fully embraced the original roof shape and materials but works in a beautiful little dormer in a style that compliments the rest of the home.
7. Going big really pays off with a dormer bungalow
If you have the kind of bungalow which allows you to really upscale your dormers, do it.
We are big believers in the value this gives not only to your actual home but also how much they can transform an otherwise small and simple home.
One of the best features in this kind of dormer bungalow project is the matching dormers, occupying different sections of the house but creating a visual feature, made even stronger when paired with each other.

8. Play with symmetry
When it comes to thinking about what you want to do with your dormer bungalow, you’ll really want to think about how you can work with what you’ve got to amplify your overall design.
A central single larger dormer installed in your bungalow can look amazing, especially when it adds something new and fresh on the exterior.
What a beautiful renovation project!
9. Maximise light with full-height windows
Dormer extensions are an excellent way to bring light into your home so it’s something super important to keep in mind when designing your project.
Full height, floor-to-ceiling windows will give your house a modern feel whilst bringing much-needed light.
If you have the height in your dormer build, this is an absolutely fantastic example of just what you can do with a bungalow
10. Use angles to elevate your home into a modern masterpiece
One of the most clever things you can do with your dormer bungalow is use the new angles to create a whole new look for your home.
Use your creative juices (or a great architect) to dream up bold ideas for how you can create something distinctive, making the most of every angle, every opportunity to work in style and ingenious window shapes to ensure you’re still meeting the most crucial build criteria of having natural light in your home.
