Our living room has come such a long way since we moved in, having now renovated it in phases. Like anyone else who has completed a house refurbishment, it’s sometimes quite hard to believe it’s all finished now and we’re able to focus on dressing up the shelves with pictures and candles to make it feel more homely.
See the before and after shots of our original living room makeover here.
If you’re not quite at this stage on your house reno yet, I hope this post provides proof/motivation that you will get there soon. The dust is unbearable at times, and the only thing to keep you going is having the end goal in sight… so my advice is to keep your vision clear and your motivation strong. You will get there, I promise!
Making our living room more autumnal
With autumn coming in, Neil and I wanted to bring a little more colour to our neutral living room.
Initially, we thought about buying some new cushions, blankets and home accessories in autumnal colours, but really there is so much you can do to affordably change the look of your home with seasonal items like flowers, leaves, branches, and pulling out winter blankets you already own.
We didn’t spend a penny on home accessories to jazz up this room.
Only a few pounds on flowers, some pumpkin potpourri and those red leaves we picked up on a recent trip to Lewes from one of my fave interior shops called Flint.
An autumn home decor DIY idea
You might have seen our autumn home decor DIY? It was Neil’s idea. He spotted autumn leaf garlands on Pinterest and took us out to the woods behind our house to collect some leaves and see if we could recreate a similar look. We are really fortunate to have a chimney breast and alcoves in our living room which means we have a lot of scope for styling.
We used garden twine from the greenhouse, some mini pegs I had lying around in my art set, and pegged the leaves on a twine washing line, one for every shelf.
It was really fun to make, and has really changed the look of the whole room for absolutely no cost whatsoever. Totally child-friendly, it’s one to do with your kids, nieces, nephews, and spruce up any room in your house with a piece of autumn.
The painting you can see propped up behind the vase and star was a birthday gift from my best friend Amy. She painted it when she was going through a really tough period in her life, which helped her process a lot of thoughts and grief. It’s such a treasured possession of mine and I think it looks beautiful on the shelves. It reminds me of her <3
Sometimes making your house smell more seasonal is enough to transform the place in itself. Neil spotted these sweet mini pumpkin potpourri which have a rich spiced smell to them that is filling the room. They look really cool on the coffee table, but I’m marginally worried in case guests think they’re chocolate and chomp on one! I also picked up this Glade autumnal candle on the weekly shop in Asda. It was £2.50 and adds to the autumn spice aroma for evenings watching TV.
